Groping and the use of sexually-abusive nicknames have become almost part of daily life for some pupils, according to the Panorama programme.
Writing in the Daily Mail, presenter Jeremy Vine said he gathered a group of a dozen mothers and fathers in a bar to talk about sexual bullying.
Richard Piggin, from the charity Beatbullying, said sexual bullying was "relatively common" and a serious problem.
"We are looking at sexual misconduct, name-calling and also inappropriate touching, and young people being forced into sexual activity that they are not really comfortable with," he told BBC Breakfast. There is a significant number of young people that we have worked with who have told us that they have either experienced it, or have witnessed it in their schools or in their community."
The Panorama programme comes after Children's Secretary Ed Balls asked the Anti Bullying Alliance to draw up guidance for teachers on tackling sexual bullying.
The guidance will tackle inappropriate language, advise teachers on how to manage cases of harassment, and encourage healthy friendships between teenage boys and girls amid concerns of misogynistic attitudes linked to gang culture.

Actually I think schools need to be harder on bullying than they are. It's the reason high school is such an ordeal for so many kids.

What part of harder on bullying involves sending the kid home to play videogames or wander around while mom and/or dad are at work, while simultaneously denying some kid who might have just been having an asshole day (because...that never happens between 11-19) an education? Because of cursing? Really?

Besides, acting like teens being douchebags to each other is a new trend is stupid.

And honestly I'm not sure it does the victims much of a service either.

I tend to agree, because I know when I was in that age bracket, there were many times that I felt like killing people just to get them to lay off of me. I also freely admit that I'm not the most stable guy in the world, and that I sometimes have a rather extreme temper. But that's what I think causes most situations like school shootings, because there's unstable kids getting bullied every day without the skills to cope with it. I'm lucky I had a therapist. Most kids don't, nor do they have parents to fall back on, since most of the time both parents are working full time anymore, that is if both parents are even together, and chances are if they're regularly the targets of bullies, they probably don't have a lot of friends to lean on either. They're alone and stewing in their own anger and self-loathing. What do people expect to happen?

That said, I agree with Josie that suspending kids for cursing and name calling is too extreme of a response in most instances. But this report sounds like some of this stuff goes a lot further than just kids calling eachother fags. It sounds like the more extreme end of the spectrum is actually pretty damn close to rape.

To treat cursing and name calling like physical assault is entirely unreasonable and an insult to victims of physical assault.

I also don't think I know any girls who got out of the highschool age bracket without hearing "sexual insults" or dealing with unwanted touching but I don't know that it all happened in school (I know I didn't even go to highschool) but I dunno what suspension would achieve.

I'm all for getting rid of physical violence in schools, but name calling and stuff, I don't think that's too bad at all. I got called names in school and it helped me become a more mature person. As they say, "It builds character" that doesn't mean it should be all around excepted, not by far, there should still obviously be punishments for that, but suspension is taking it way too far. The kids that turn to being violent in schools just can't cope, and that means they probably wont cope with people in the outside world when they try to make fun of them or joke around or anything. People wonder where our cereal killers come from, it isn't the people who get bullied, it's the people who get bullied and freak the fuck out when it happens.

But I dunno. The school system can do what ever the fuck it wants. If it wants to raise a generation of pussy kids who can't take insults as adults without wetting themselves and running home, that's their business. I'm not in it, and I don't have any kids in it, yet, so they can go ahead and do whatever they want.

"It builds character" is the weakest, most ridiculous argument for anything.

I was bullied in school too. Mercilessly. For years and years. It didn't "build character", it's left me insecure. It's taken me till 20, after a year and a half of a relationship with someone who pretty much has to tell me how good I am every day for me to even start feeling good about myself.

Schoolyard bullying is something that is probably never going to go away but something that schools should do everything they can to eliminate.

Oh, also? Bullying doesn't make you better at coping. It makes you better at hiding things and shoving them in deeply till they turn into fucking neuroses.
